An interesting new study on coffee shows that drinking coffee can alter estrogen levels in women and what is most surprising is that the impacts vary by race.
Coffee appears to lower estrogen in white women, but tends to raise the levels in Asian women. These effects appear to be so minimal that they have no real impact on healthy women. However, this study does help to understand how caffeine is metabolized by different genetic groups. The study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and studied women aged 18-44.
On average, these women consumed 90 mg of caffeine per day, about the amount in one cup of coffee. About 90% of women in this age group drink the caffeine equivalent of 1-2 cups of coffee per day! It seems these effects were linked only to the caffeine in coffee and not with other types of caffeinated beverages. Other factors probably also play a role in that than just caffeine, like adding cream and sugar, or the amount of antioxidants in the drink.
Short-term, healthy women don’t need to worry about caffeine intake, especially given the health benefits of coffee. More research is needed to track these effects over many years.

This time of year, millions of people are resolving to be healthier in 2012. Coffee has been found to be healthy in many ways: it contains many vitamins and minerals essential for proper body function, protects against several types of cancers and other diseases, and is the leading source of antioxidants in the US diet!
Whether you’re a long-time coffee fan or adding it to your diet in the new year, coffee can be a very healthy beverage choice. However, adding creamers, syrups, and sweeteners to your daily coffee can negate its health benefits and foil your New Years’ Resolution before it even starts. Just two sugar packets per day in your cup of coffee are an extra 10,950 calories per year!
The healthiest way to enjoy your coffee is black. Luckily, HealthWise Coffee has no bitterness and most of our customers enjoy it this way. If you think you need something else in your coffee, try one of our flavored varieties or some of these healthy additions:

New research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School indicates that drinking your daily cup of coffee may reduce the risk of developing a certain type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.
Nearly one million new cases of basal cell carcinoma are diagnosed each year in the U.S., making it the most common form of the disease. In this study, the amount of caffeine consumed was inversely associated with risk, meaning higher consumption of coffee indicated lower risk of skin cancer. Decaffeinated coffee was not associated with the lower skin cancer risk, suggesting that the caffeine is a main preventative factor.
This study was conducted on 113,000 adults over more than 20 years, and the women’s risk was lowered by about 20% for those who drank three cups of coffee per day compared to those who drank less than one. For men, the risk was lowered by about 9 percent. Researchers find this study very encouraging for the prevention of skin cancer….just another great benefit of drinking coffee!!

Something so ubiquitous as coffee deserves its own day…and today’s the day!
Legend has it that a goat herder by the name of Kaldi in Ethiopia first came across coffee in the 9th century when his goats ate the berries off a bush. The goats seemed more lively to Kaldi, so he chewed some himself, was excited by what ate, and then took some cherries to a Muslim holy man at the local monastery. The holy man discarded the cherries in the fireplace; the beans roasted; the delicious aroma spread; the roasted beans were recovered and were then dissolved in water. From there, the first cup of coffee was consumed!
That may or may not be true, but it’s a good story. References to coffee first appeared in writings from the 10th century, and it is known that coffee cultivation spread from Ethiopia in the 15th century to Yemen, then Egypt and beyond. The first coffee house was in Istanbul in 1554!
Little did that goat herder realize some 1200 years ago that coffee would turn out to be the most consumed drink in the world after that of water… and be shown to help prevent heart disease certain cancers, Parkinsons, Type 2 Diabetes, and many other maladies as well.

A new study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston suggests drinking coffee lowers the risk of depression in women. Over a 10-year period , women who drank 2-3 cups of caffeinated coffee per day were 15% less likley to develop depression than those who drank one cup or less per week.
This new study is the largest of its kind and included more than 50,000 women in the U.S. The data spanned 1980-2006 and the results were published in the September 26th issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. Similar studies involving coffee and mental health have also found a link between coffee consumption and reduced risk of suicide.
This study is just one of many that suggests coffee is associated wth health benefits – be sure to check out our previous blog posts for more!

A study published in June in Gastroenterology reported that coffee drinking is associated with improved responses to Hepatitis C therapy. Drinking three or more cups of coffee per day increased the chances of an improved response by 80%.
It was already known that coffee is associated with lower levels of liver enzymes and a slower progression of pre-existing liver disease. Over the 72 weeks of this study, patients who drank more than three cups of coffee per day were significantly more likely than non-coffee drinkers to have a positive treatment response at all points throughout the course of the study.
While it doesn’t seem the same effects were found with the consumption of tea, caffeine is believed to be a factor in the response. Researchers wrote future studies are needed to replicate findings in other populations.

Think you need caffeine to wake up in the morning? It may be all in your head. A new study from the University of London suggests the energy jolt people experience when drinking coffee may just be in the mind of the drinker. The researchers studied a group of London students, divided into four groups by gender and whether or not they were receiving caffeinated coffee. Some students believed they were drinking caffeinated coffee, when in reality it was actually decaf.
As it turns out, all of the students who believed they were drinking caffeinated coffee had improved attention and increased the speed at which they completed a card-sorting task. However, the increased attention only occurs if you think you are drinking caffeinated coffee, and not decaf. So, if you’re accidentally drinking decaf one morning chances are you’ll be just as alert as you normally would be with caffeinated coffee!
