It’s now been one year since we launched our new website, and we sincerely want to thank our online customers for your support.
With this “Anniversary Edition”, we are replaying what we consider the best and most appropriate columns over the past year. This information is new for many customers.
There are a couple plugs at the end related to our current business.
Our approach with respect to online business has been simple:
- Provide the best information we can about the health aspects of coffee in general, and HealthWise in particular.
- Provide pricing to our customers about the same as if they picked the coffee up at their local store.
We believe that ultimately HealthWise Gourmet Coffees and it’s benefits will be mainstream.
Thank you for your interest in HealthWise Gourmet Coffees!!

There are 17 Essential Minerals required to support human biochemical processes by playing roles in cell structure and function.
And they are:
- Calcium: For muscle, heart and digestive system health; builds bone; neutralizes acidity.
- Chloride: For production of hydrochloric acid in stomach.
- Cobalt: For normal functioning of brain and nervous system.
- Copper: For component of many enzymes.
- Fluorine: For formation of tooth enamel.
- Iodine: For biosynthesis of thyroxine.
- Iron: For many proteins and enzymes.
- Magnesium: Essential to maintain acid-alkaline balance.
- Manganese: For being a co-factor in enzyme functions.
- Molybdenum: For the enzyme xanthine oxidase.
- Nickel: For Urease, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia.
- Phosphorus: A component of bones.
- Potassium: A systemic electrolyte.
- Selenium: Essential to activity of antioxidant enzymes.
- Sodium: A systemic electrolyte.
- Sulfur: For certain amino acids.
- Zinc: Required for several enzymes.
The important point here is that every one of these essential minerals are present in HealthWise Gourmet Coffees - roasted through an all-natural process.
Did you know our bodies use over 80 different minerals to stay healthy? When we think of these minerals, most of us think of those we need in large amounts, called macrominerals, like calcium and sodium. However, our bodies also require minerals in small quantities called trace minerals, or microminerals. Although trace minerals are only required in minute amounts, they are nevertheless important for healthy body functioning.
For example, selenium stimulates the metabolism and is an antioxidant, meaning it helps protect body cells and tissues from damage. Adequate levels of selenium support a healthy immune system and may help combat illnesses such as arthritis and heart disease. In other words, selenium, like many other trace minerals, can help you feel younger and healthier longer.
Most of us find these minerals through fruits and vegetables, whole grains, or dietary supplements. Surprisingly, the mineral contents of many foods we consider to be healthy have decreased over time. Farmers are paid by the weight and appearance of their crops, and often use pesticides and fertilizers to achieve these ideal-looking products.
These chemicals can kill micro-organisms needed to create organic mineral complexes, and when they are killed off, so are the minerals they would have produced. Broccoli today contains 50% less calcium as it did in 1963, and onions and potatoes are now devoid of Vitamin A. To avoid mineral malnutrition, it is increasingly important to seek out foods and beverages that are high in mineral content.
Mineral malnutrition can often lead to minor or severe health problems. Adequate mineral consumption may increase energy levels and help reduce the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and even cancer.
Each cup of HealthWise Coffee contains dozens of trace minerals, making it easy for you to add these vital trace minerals to your diet with your daily cup of coffee!

(We ran the article below last year when the founder of the process that led to HealthWise coffee turned 100. We are very happy to report that Fred has turned 101).
Most of us can only wonder if we could possibly live to be 100, but the founder of HealthWise Gourmet Coffees has done just that!
Fred Hacksunda of Pleasantville, New York has now reached the century mark. Fred was born in 1908, a year in which Teddy Roosevelt was president, the first Model T car was produced, and the population in the U.S. was just 89 million. Now a hundred years later, there are only about 55,000 centenarians in the U.S., and Fred is one of them.
Some twenty five years ago, when Fred Hacksunda was just a youngster of 75, he along with a doctor and a friend developed a methodology for roasting coffee that reduces the acid in coffee. The process they developed also imparts significant minerals and micronutrients which the roasting processes of other coffee companies - including the largest in the business - can’t match. This 100% all natural process went on to be approved by the FDA as producing a completely unadulterated coffee. The name “HealthWise” was later taken for the obvious reason that this is a coffee that must be good for you.
HealthWise coffees are good for you since they provide a significant amount of the Recommended Daily Allowance for essential minerals in a brewed cup; and with low acid, a coffee drinker can drink multiple cups without stomach discomfort. Beyond that, the coffee has an exceptional taste - a smooth, mellow taste with no bitterness or harshness, and no unpleasant aftertaste.
In the 25 years since Fred and his partners first developed their unique roasting process, HealthWise coffee has gone on to be endorsed or approved by many business, government and even religious organizations. These include the American Culinary Institute; many Fortune 500 companies; branches of the federal government such as the GSA, Veterans Administration and all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Vatican even allows the use of its name, logo and seals with the sale of this extraordinary coffee.
During his long and full life, Fred has operated an apple orchard, sold real estate in Florida, and been in the antique business, among his other endeavors. During World War II, Fred served as a radio officer in Navy Air Transport providing logistical services.
Fred recently stated “I’ve been fortunate to accomplish a great deal in my lifetime, and I am very proud to have helped develop HealthWise coffee. This is something that truly helps people and something that can be perpetuated long after I’m gone”.
Fred also indicated that he is often asked what the key to his longevity is, and did his healthful coffee discovery play a part in that? Fred said “For me, the secret to living a longer life is keeping a positive attitude, having a strong faith, and living a healthful lifestyle. A coffee that is good for you can only help”.
Today HealthWise Gourmet Coffees, LLC is led by Michael Reines, CEO and Jim Couch, President and COO. Together they are working to bring HealthWise coffee to a broader audience in the U.S. and overseas. Michael Reines indicated “Specialty coffee is the fastest growing segment of the beverage market, while people are becoming increasingly health conscious. Put those two together, and we believe what Fred Hacksunda started with HealthWise coffee can play an important role in people’s lives”.
(This article ran in March 2009. Since that time the cost per cup of HealthWise has risen a penny to $.09)
Container sizes of coffee are pretty much the same….usually 11 or 12 ounces or something in between. But when it comes to the cost of what you are drinking, it’s the number of cups you derive that are most important.
The HealthWise TechnoRoasting™ process results in brewed coffee that will provide up to 110 cups of coffee from one can or bag, depending on taste preference. To get to that, use one-half tablespoon of HealthWise coffee per 6 ounces of water.
Recently, we surveyed the retail costs and recommended tablespoons of various coffees, and compared those with HealthWise. The purpose was to demonstrate how HealthWise Coffee is a tremendous value, in addition to its other exceptional features.
The amounts below compare the Price Per Cup of HealthWise (online 100% Colombian Supremo five pack) with other coffees found in a supermarket:
HealthWise $.08
Eight O’Clock $.19
Java Delight $.26
Newman’s Own $.28
Dunkin Donuts $.28
Papa Nicholas $.30
Marques De Paiva $.32
Tully’s Colombian $.36
Starbuck’s $.46
Illy’s $.63
Add to this exceptional taste, no bitterness, no harshness, less acid and it is very apparent that HealthWise is indeed an exceptional coffee!
