Roasting a Healthier Coffee
The name we have given our roasting process is TechnoRoasting™. This proprietary process is an all natural process that has been approved by the FDA. The Department of Agriculture states that it is 100% unadulterated coffee.
HealthWise Gourmet Coffees are made from 100% Colombian Arabica Supremo beans, one of the highest grades of coffee beans available. Beans are selected with great care, eliminating damaged or broken beans to ensure the best tasting coffee. We roast our coffee in small batches, thus ensuring that utmost care is given to each batch, each can, and each bag.
Applying the TechnoRoasting™ process to coffee beans results in features of brewed coffee that are exceptional. Excess acids and irritants have been virtually eliminated, helpful for all who suffer from heartburn or stomach conditions exacerbated by acid. This has been accomplished without flavor loss. The brewed coffee has no bitterness or harshness, yet has a wonderful, rich and mellow taste. Brewed HealthWise coffees have significant amounts of minerals and micro-nutrients – far superior to competitors’ coffees whose processes roast out many of the minerals.
Beyond the taste and health aspects of our roasting process, TechnoRoasting™ also imparts certain functional characteristics that are very beneficial to the utility of how coffee is used. Competitor coffees can remain on a warmer minutes before the liquid starts evaporating and the coffee takes on an increasingly bitter taste. HealthWise coffee can remain on a warmer hours and still retain its mellow taste. Similarly, you can refrigerate HealthWise coffee for up to one week, reheat it (to below boiling), and find that the taste is like the coffee had just been brewed. Also, the yield from our coffee is well beyond what you have experienced with other coffees – you get more cups of coffee from the same amount of ground coffee.
Originally developed by a researcher in the mid-1980s, the methodology for roasting coffee in this unique manner has been acquired by HealthWise Gourmet Coffees, LLC, and the Company is now marketing its coffees through the internet and other distribution channels.
Why is HealthWise™ a Healthier Coffee?
Coffee is the #1 source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet – nothing else comes close – according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Scranton. Over one-half of the U.S. population drinks coffee every day.
HealthWise Gourmet Coffees takes the health aspects of coffee much further than any other coffee, and delivers lower acid, minerals and micro-nutrients.
Millions of consumers in the U.S. cannot tolerate the acid present in coffee, due to acid reflux, GERD, or some other stomach discomfort. If you are one of those people, you should find that you can drink multiple cups of HealthWise coffee and not have stomach discomfort.
Beyond stomach discomfort, how much acid is present in our bodies is very important – too much can be bad for you. Please refer to the “Health Aspects of Coffee” discussion below for further information.
Test results have shown that HealthWise Gourmet Coffees are a significant contributor to the Recommended Daily Allowance of certain minerals. The following percentage of RDA is based on a 16 ounce mug of HealthWise coffee:
Essential Minerals
Calcium 4.6%
Potassium 18.6%
Iron 12.9%
Zinc 6.4%
HealthWise has dozens of trace minerals in its coffees. These micro-nutrients are essential for promoting normal growth and development. Some examples include Boron, which promotes normal growth, and maintains proper levels of steroid hormones; Molybdenum, which promotes normal growth and reproductive capability; Selenium, which can protect against Mercury poisoning, and mitigate against muscle pain, weakness and heart disease.
If you are going to enjoy coffee every day, you might as
well drink a coffee that not only tastes great…
but is good for you as well!
Health Aspects of Coffee
Much has been researched and written about coffee and the effects it has on people.
The Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies was formed in 1999. The organization is dedicated, in part, to investigate the health effects of coffee consumption, including the action of various compounds found in coffee and potential therapeutic uses based on the pharmacology of its chemical components.
At the October 26, 2007 Vanderbilt Conference, the institute gave a presentation titled “Health Benefits of Coffee Consumption”. The following is a direct quote from their presentation summary:
Their presentation went on to indicate that the latest epidemiologic studies consistently showed that coffee consumption reduces the rates of common diseases, such as depression/anxiety, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes associated with obesity, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, cancer, and alcohol/drug addiction.
The following addresses some of the key features of coffee:
...Antioxidants in Coffee
Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or by environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Among foods, many fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants. Among beverages, cocoa, tea, and coffee are excellent sources of antioxidants. And once again, coffee is the #1 source for antioxidants among the U.S. public.
...Acid in Coffee
A person’s pH balance is the first major line of defense against sickness and disease and for health and vitality. Cells of the tissue of our body, organs, and glands cannot absorb nutrients when the pH is off. The blood in the human body needs to stay in a pH range between 7.35 and 7.45. The term pH stands for “potential of hydrogen” and is a measure of acidity or alkalinity. A person whose pH is above 7.45 can suffer from alkalosis, while a person having a pH below 7.35 can suffer from acidosis.
Acid producing foods can be found in many products in the typical American diet, including animal products like meat, eggs, and dairy, and beverages such as soft drinks and coffee.
What happens if a person’s pH drops is out of balance, drops below 7.35 and acidosis occurs? Mild acidosis can cause such problems as the following:
How does a body react when its pH decreases? The body has to compensate for the loss, and one thing that happens is that it robs minerals from the bones, joints, muscles, gallbladder and mucosal lining of the digestive tract. When that happens over a long enough period of time, detrimental outcomes can occur such as low bone density, sore muscles, pain in the intestines, erosion of the lining of the esophagus leading to GERD, and more.
Not only does HealthWise™ deliver a low acid coffee, it provides minerals
to the body which helps prevent the need for the body to draw minerals
from bones, joints, and muscles.
...Caffeine in Coffee
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, having the effect of temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. The amount of caffeine necessary to produce effects varies from person to person depending on body size and degree of tolerance to caffeine. It takes less than an hour for caffeine to begin affecting the body and a mild dose wears off in three to four hours. Consumption of caffeine does not eliminate the need for sleep; it only temporarily reduces the sensation of being tired.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists caffeine as a “Multiple Purpose Generally Recognized as Safe Food Substance”. The Foods Standards Agency has recommended that pregnant women should limit their caffeine intake to less than 300 mg per day – the equivalent of four cups of coffee per day. A higher intake may be associated with miscarriage.
Coffee should be consumed in moderation. In large amounts, and especially over extended periods of time, caffeine can lead to a condition known as caffeinism. Caffeinism usually combines caffeine dependency with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions including nervousness, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, headaches among others.
For those people who wish to reduce or limit their caffeine intake,
HealthWise™ offers Decaffeinated coffee as well as a Low Caffeine Coffee.
