Coffee’s Exercise Benefits

Now that summer is in full swing, many people are heading outdoors for bike rides, walks, and runs.  Coffee can actually be a great pre-workout drink (without the cream and sugar!).

Here are 5 quick facts why a cup of coffee before exercising is beneficial:

1. Accelerates Fat Loss

a.       Coffee consumed before exercise can cause fat cells to be used as an energy source as opposed to glycogen. The caffeine will increase your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories throughout the day.

2. Increases Performance

a.       A study published in the British Journal of Sports Science found subjects consuming coffee before running 1,500 meters completed their runs 4.2 seconds faster, on average.

3. Improves Focus

a.       Black Coffee provides an increase in mental focus, helping you make it through tough workouts.

4. Decreases Muscle Pain

a.       Researchers at the University of Illinois found subjects who consumed coffee prior to exercise experienced less muscle pain during their workouts than their non-caffeinated counterparts, which can help you work harder longer.

5. Prevents Disease

a.       Coffee is the leading source of antioxidants in the American diet, and has been known to help prevent Diabetes, certain cancers, Parkinson’s, and other diseases.
